Docosahexaneoic acid (DHA) is an essential fatty acid from the Omega 3 group. Normally, fish oils contain more eicosapentaeonoic acid (EPA) than DHA. Yet the body easily converts DHA into EPA when necessary, while the reverse process is much more difficult.
Super DHA is a specific molecular distillate which provides a DHA concentration four times higher than that of standard products. The molecular distillation procedure removes all traces of contamination (mercury, lead, arsenic) that might remain in fish oils due to water pollution.
  • DHA is prevalent in brain cell membranes. It is the main fatty acid in the brain (which contains 60% fats) and in the retina. Adequate levels of DHA are essential for brain development during pregnancy and early childhood. Some scientists have suggested that serious degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and senile dementia may be due, at least partly, to prolonged deficiency in DHA.
  • Because of its importance in the development of the brain and nervous system, DHA intake in the mother's diet influences birth-weight. Breast milk contains 0.2% DHA, and for this reason in particular, breastfed babies have better resistance and better visual acuity than bottle-fed babies.
  • DHA (but not EPA) reduced hypertension and heart rate in men with mild hyperlipidaemia in a controlled, comparative study.
  • DHA supplementation improves learning capacity, helps to halt age-associated cognitive decline, halves the risk of death from heart attack, reduces triglycerides and decreases risk of thrombosis, prevents cardiac arrhythmia, lowers the risk of atherosclerosis, decreases cancer cell proliferation, has an anti-inflammatory effect in arthritis and osteo-arthritis, and benefits patients with depression (Health benefits of docosahexaneoic acid Phamacol Res 1999 Sep;40(3):211-25).
