Sudden development of clots in the arteries is the third leading cause of death and the principal cause of disability among adults in developed countries. While the blood's capacity to coagulate is essential to survival, when clots form in arteries narrowed by plaque (a thrombosis) or when they travel to other vessels (an embolism) the consequences can be catastrophic. Nattokinase is a unique and powerful systemic enzyme obtained by fermenting non-GMO soya beans. Around twenty years ago, a Japanese research team led by Dr Hiroyuki Sumi discovered its fibrinolytic activity (regulates clot formation) in vitro. This activity was subsequently confirmed by several animal and in vivo studies. Fibrinolytic activity and blood mobility showed significant improvements. Several other cardiovascular parameters, such as HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, also improved.
