Xerononi® is an extract of noni (Morinda citrifolia), standardised in morindine and xeronin, two of the actives principles of the noni fruit.
The Polynesian healers, the Kahunas, have used the noni for over 2000 years to treat a wide range of diseases. Traditionally, the noni is believed to stimulate the immune system and thus help combat infections and even prevent cancer and the spread of tumours. It is also used for the relief of pain associated with inflammation. Over recent years, studies have confirmed a scientific basis for these traditional uses.
Morindine activates the small intestine’s dormant enzymes which the body needs for effective digestion, to calm the nerves and increase mental and physical energy. Xeronin protects and preserves the shape and fluidity of specific proteins which must cross the cell walls and be used to form healthy tissue.
In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that noni juice or extract:
- stimulates the immune system (production of T cells): when administered to mice injected with lung cancer cells, it prolonged the animals’ survival, probably by acting on macrophages and/or lymphocytes;
- has antioxidant properties which contribute to its anti-cancer effect;
- has anti-tumour activity and inhibits the growth of cancerous tumours. Its cytotoxic effect on various cancer cell cultures has been shown to be dose-dependent;
- inhibits production of TNF alpha (tumour necrosis factor), an endogenous tumour promoter; it also seems to have a preventive effect at the initiation stage of carcinogenesis;
- boosts the efficacy of certain anti-cancer drugs such as prednisolone – its use may allow lower doses of drugs to be used and thus reduce a treatment’s toxic side-effects;
- has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects: in Wistar rats, it reduced inflammation of buccal mucosa; in animal models, it demonstrated a dose-dependent analgesic effect;
- has an inhibitory effect on the metabolic pathways of arachidonic acid (blocking the activity of Cox-2 and 5-LOX enzymes) which probably explains its potential for protecting brain cells and preventing inflammation, as well as its anti-cancer effect;
- in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes, it significantly reduced blood sugar levels and accelerated wound-healing;
- demonstrates significant anti-fungal and anti-microbial activity against various fungal and bacterial strains. In particular, it may combat candida and aspergillosis.
