Cissus quadrangularis is used in ayurvedic medicine as a general tonic and analgesic and to heal bone fractures.
¤ Studies have shown Cissus quadrangularis extract to have a range of health benefits, in particular:
- in animals, it was shown to promote healing of bone injuries. Cissus quadrangularis extract contains natural plant steroids called ketosterones, which accelerate bone healing by acting as glucocorticoid antagonists. They also neutralized the antianabolic effects of cortisone in the treatment of fractures ;
- in mice, it had an analgesic effect comparable to that of salicylic acid ;
- it exerted a venotonic effect on isolated human umbilical vein similar to that of a mix of flavonoids (90% diosmin, 10% hesperidin). These results support the traditional use of Cissus quadrangularis for treating haemorrhoidal pain and inflammation ;
- it has potent antioxidant activity and neutralises free radicals in various systems, which explains its efficacy in damaged tissue. It inhibits lipid peroxidation and free radicals and stimulates activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes ;
- it has a gastro-protective effect : it is used in traditional medicine to treat gastric disorders ; in rats, it protected against aspirin-induced gastric toxicity. This effect may be the result of its antioxidant effect and attenuation of the oxidative mechanism and neutrophil infiltration.
- in rats with experimentally-induced gastric ulcers, Cissus quadrangularis extract reduced the size of the ulceration and restored mucosal epithelium ;
- in several studies on obese or overweight subjects, Cissus quadrangularis extract induced significant weight reduction. The increase in levels of creatine and 5-HTP induced by supplementation suggests that Cissus quadrangularis acts through an appetite-control mechanism and by promoting an increase in lean muscle mass. Supplementation also results in a reduction in total and LDL cholesterol, in triglycerides and fasting glycaemia, thus reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Take three capsules a day, 30 minutes before eating.
