Astaxanthin is the red pigment responsible for the colour of shellfish, salmon and pink flamingos. It is an exceptionally powerful antioxidant carotenoid which also has immuno-modulating, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective and photo-protective properties. Recent studies show that astaxanthin is much more effective than beta-carotene against the singlet oxygen free radical. It also fights several other harmful free radicals. It is particularly effective at protecting fragile cell and mitochondrial membranes (“Astaxanthin is much more effective than vitamin E, beta-carotene and lutein in inhibiting peroxydation process by harmful free radicals”, Miki W. et al, 1991.)

¤ A number of in vitro and in vivo studies - animal and human - have demonstrated the antioxidant efficacy of astaxanthin and its benefits in the prevention and/or treatment of oxidative stress-related neurodegenerative diseases and cardio-vascular diseases, as well as in protecting the skin and eyes from UV-induced damage.
