Essential for life, magnesium is involved in over 300 of the human body's enzyme reactions. Magnesium is needed for a regular heartbeat, for muscles and nerves to function properly, for the immune system to work effectively, and for bones to stay strong and healthy. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, maintains normal blood pressure and is involved in protein synthesis and energy metabolism, as well as in a great many other processes. Magnesium deficiency increases the risk of disease.

¤ Unfortunately, magnesium intake is often inadequate: in France, for example, almost one in four women, and one in six men are lacking in magnesium. This deficiency is largely linked to a diet and lifestyle synonymous with a lower intake of high-calorie foods, and consumption of poor dietary sources of magnesium. Other factors, such as stress and alcohol, can reduce magnesium levels in the body.

¤ Magnesium supplementation is therefore particularly important. Indeed, it can take between six weeks' and six months' supplementation to restore magnesium levels from deficient to normal.
