¤ research has shown that glycine propionyl-L-carnitine, a molecular component comprising a propionyl ester and an additional glycine component, can increase levels of nitric oxide in sedentary individuals engaging in physical exercise and improve performance in trained athletes. A form of carnitine produced naturally by the body, propionyl-L-carnitine has a special affinity for cardiac and skeletal muscle. Glycine is considered a glucogenic amino acid that helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Studies show that glycine propionyl-L-carnitine:
- significantly increases plasma nitrate/nitrite levels (a marker of nitric oxide levels):

- in sedentary subjects following a physical training programme,
- in physically-fit, resistance-trained men, when subjected to physical exertion;

- has antioxidant properties - demonstrated by an observed decrease in the level of oxidative damage to lipids, measured in a rested state, in subjects given supplements for 8 weeks
- increases muscle strength in healthy, trained men subjected to intense physical exertion.
