L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that cannot be produced by the body and must be ingested from the diet. It is the precursor first of L-tyrosine and subsequently of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine (the cerebral equivalent of adrenalin), epinephrine and dopamine (which contributes to a sense of well-being): it's a mild brain stimulant and is well-tolerated. Via different pathways, it can also be converted into phenylethylamine, a substance that occurs naturally in the brain and which elevates mood.
¤ L-Phenylalanine also initiates production of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in the intestine which sends a signal of satiety to the brain, thus suppressing appetite. Research in humans shows that taking a combination of amino acids, including L-phenylalanine, half an hour before a meal reduces by 22.5% the amount of food consumed: it is a natural, safe appetite-suppressant.
