The natural ingredients in Hair & Nails Formula - sulphur-containing amino acids, essential minerals, B group vitamins
work synergistically to improve the health and appearance of the hair and nails.
Keratins are the major protein components of hair and nails and contain very high levels of sulphur, mainly in the form of amino acids such as cysteine or methionine.
¤
Once ingested, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) donates its sulphur to amino acids such as methionine or cysteine. Brittle hair and nails that break easily are the first signs of sulphur deficiency. MSM supplementation improves the health and appearance of the hair and nails, making them stronger and shinier.

Sulphur-containing amino acids play an important role in the structure of keratin. The rate of re-growth, protein synthesis and the capillary fibre diameter all depend on availability of cysteine. Cysteine supplementation in the form of L-cysteine or N-acetyl-cysteine stimulates hair and nail growth and reduces brittleness.
¤
Taurine, another sulphur-containing amino acid which is stored in the hair root, exerts a protective effect by combating deformation of the capillary root, thus prolonging the hair's survival and growth.
¤
Silica is an essential trace element found in the outer sheath of the hair as well as in the nails. Silica supplementation makes the hair and nails smoother and less brittle. It thickens the hair and improves its elasticity.
¤
Zinc affects the production of keratin and thus also plays an important role in the growth and vitality of the hair and nails. Zinc deficiency makes the hair and nails more fragile. In androgenic hair loss, zinc helps to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, a scalp enzyme which is responsible for excess sebum and hair loss.

A number of B vitamins are also important :
- biotin strengthens the nails and arrests hair loss ; studies suggest that biotin supplementation increases the thickness of the nails and reduces their fragility ;
- choline promotes fat metabolism and helps maintain hydration of the hair and nails ;
- PABA, para-aminobenzoic acid, restores colour to grey hair in 10-25% of cases.

inositol improves the health of the hair and epidermis. In mice, inositol deficiency induces hair loss.
