Serratia peptidase or serrapeptase is proteolytic enzyme produced by the Serrata bacteria which lives in the intestine of the silkworm. Serrapeptase has been successfully used for over 30 years in Europe and Asia to relieve pain, inflammation and excessive mucous secretion, with more than 40 clinical studies demonstrating its health benefits.

¤ It reduces inflammation. Clinical studies have shown its efficacy in a wide range of inflammatory diseases, and in particular, in trauma-induced oedema. Serrapeptase's anti-inflammatory properties are similar to those of the salicylates, ibuprofen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs).

¤ It is effective in treating inflammatory ear, nose and throat diseases. Studies have highlighted its benefits in the management of, in particular, chronic sinusitis, where it helps eliminate broncho-pulmonary secretions (mucous).

¤ It boosts the effects of antibiotics and combats bacteria resistance.

¤ It has been used with success to treat cystic breast disease.

¤ Serrapeptase digests dead tissue - indeed, this is how it frees the silkworm from its cocoon. Blood clots, fibrous layers which make up atheromatous plaque and cysts are all dead tissue which can be digested by serrapeptase. The German doctor Hans Nieper has used it to treat blockage of the arteries and recommends it in particular for carotid artery occlusion when conventional surgery is too risky. Doppler tests conducted after a year's treatment show significant improvements in carotid blood circulation.
