Essential fatty acids form an integral part of each of the body’s cells and are crucial to their growth and division. They are basic components of cell membranes, ensuring their suppleness and fluidity as well as enabling important nutrients to penetrate cells, and cellular waste to be eliminated. Over 50% of the brain and nervous system is made up of essential fatty acids.
¤ A sufficient and balanced intake of essential fatty acids is vital for maintaining and protecting our health. However, the industrialisation of food production and increasing use of refined oils and saturated fats means that a significant proportion of the population does not consume a balanced intake.
¤ Flax seed oil is the richest plant-based dietary source of alpha-linolenic acid, the most important of the omega-3 group of fatty acids. Other fatty acids in this group, in particular, eicopentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are subsequently produced from alpha-linolenic acid by conversion through the elongation-desaturation pathway. Flax seed oil also contains linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid, and oleic acid, a non-essential but nevertheless beneficial, omega-9 fatty acid.
Flax seed oil is richer in omega-3 than fish oils.
