- Andrographis paniculata, or Indian echinacea, has been used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine to treat fever and respiratory infections. Its efficacy is supported by clinical trials. The use of Andrographis in preventing and treating complication-free respiratory infections such as colds, sinusitis, bronchitis and pharyngitis has been recognised by the World Health Organisation.
- Echinaceas (Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea) have immunostimulant properties that are particularly beneficial for respiratory tract infections. Increases in antioxidant and immune responses and rapid improvements in symptoms were observed in studies on the common cold.
- Extract of Coptis chinensis root (Chinese goldthread) is an antioxidant and it stimulates the immune system. It has antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects, as well as antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects.
- The Greek physician Dioscoride used to prescribe common mullein root for pulmonary disorders. Its softening mucilages and anti-inflammatory harpagosides make it effective for inflamed throats. It is traditionally used to relieve coughs.
- Extracts of gentian root and red cloverleaf have been shown in recent studies to have antiviral properties. Red clover has been used in China and Russia to treat certain respiratory infections.
- Zinc helps reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms.
