Biocurcumax™ is a patented extract of the rhizome of Curcuma longa, standardised to provide 95 % of natural mixed curcuminoids and sesquiterpenoids. Six times more bioavailable than standard extracts, it enables blood levels of curcumin to be retained for longer, at lower doses.

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a component of turmeric, the yellow spice extracted from the roots of Curcuma longa. It has been used for many, many years in the traditional medicine of India and south-east Asia. A number of studies have highlighted its antioxidant properties (several times more potent than those of vitamin E) and anti-inflammatory properties (it blocks the LOX (lipo-oxygenase) and COX (cyclo-oxygenase) pathways of arachidonic acid metabolisation), and have shown its potential in the prevention and treatment of cancer. It also appears to be able to combat various aspects of rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

However, the bioavailability of curcumin in both animals and humans has, until now, been relatively low. It is also metabolised rapidly by the body and only retained at clinically insignificant levels, resulting in fewer beneficial effects than the promising findings of scientific research might have indicated.

A study of 15 male and female subjects, aged 25-45, was conducted to compare the bioavailability of Biocurcumax™ with that of another Curcuma longa extract. Blood samples were taken before a single dose of both Biocurcumax™ and curcumin were administered, and then at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours after absorption. Biocurcumax™ was shown to be 5 to 7 times more bioavailable than the standard curcumin. In addition, Biocurcumax™ remained at the highest blood concentration for over 8 hours, while for the other extract, it was 4 to 5 hours.

Since Biocurcumax™ is six times more bioavailable than standard extracts and remains in the bloodstream longer, the dose required to produce clinical benefits can be significantly reduced.
