Boswellia serrata extract is used for its anti-inflammatory properties because, unlike most drugs of this type, it does not cause ulcers or gastritis. Boswellia is not an analgesic as such, but it:
acts directly on the inflammation which is the direct cause of the pain
reduces swelling of joints and morning stiffness
increases mobility by blocking leucotriene synthesis, in particular that involving the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. Leucotrienes are involved in a number of inflammatory diseases: they cause inflammation by accelerating free radical oxidative damage, the break up of calcium, and auto-immune reactions.
Several clinical studies conducted by the Indian government validate the traditional ayurvedic use of Boswellia. In particular, a study involving 175 bedridden patients showed good or excellent improvements, in 67% of cases, in morning stiffness, pain and ability to carry out everyday activities. The improvements were generally seen quite quickly, on average - after two to four weeks' treatment.
Even better results are obtained when Boswellia is combined with the herbs Ashwagandha and Curcuma (see Ayurveda section for these products). Other studies demonstrate Boswellia's efficacy in 70% of bronchial asthma patients both in terms of symptoms and biochemical parameters, as well as in the treatment of irritable colon.
Each vegetarian capsule contains 300 mg Boswellia serrata standardized to contain 70% (210 mg) boswellic acids.
