¤ Corydalis is a plant native to China. It has been shown to contain ingredients that have analgesic and relaxant effects on the nervous system. Preliminary reports suggest it may also help to reduce nerve pain.

¤ Eschscholzia californica was traditionally used by Native Americans for its tranquilizing effects, particularly in the case of toothache. It has analgesic properties and is used to ease inflammation and pain. It also encourages muscle relaxation.

¤ Iridoforce™ is a patented extract of Harpagophytum, rich in its active principle harpagoside, which has antialgic and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro tests show that, harpagoside inhibits - in a dose-dependent manner - the two biosynthesis pathways of the eicosanoids - cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, thus significantly reducing joint inflammation. A number of double-blind studies comparing the pain relief effects of Harpagophytum extract and NSAIDs have found no significant differences between the two. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger have been recognized for centuries. Ginger root contains gingerols - highly potent anti-inflammatory constituents which can reduce pain and improve mobility in patients with inflammatory disease of the joints ; ginger extract supplements were clearly shown to decrease pain scores in patients with painful arthritis of the knee.

¤ Willow bark extract contains salycin, metabolized by the body as salicylic acid which has antipyretic and analgesic properties. Both the German Commission E and the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) have recognized the efficacy of willow bark in relieving rheumatic pain and headache and in reducing fever. In a study of patients with chronic low back pain, 39% of those supplemented with willow bark for four weeks found their pain had subsided compared with 6% in the placebo group.

¤ DL-phenylalanine, a racemic mixture of the L and D forms of phenylanine, inhibits degradation of enkephalins, the body's pain-relieving substances. DL-phenylalanine has been successfully used to treat chronic pain in humans.
