Our dietary supplement is formulated from an extract of Ginkgo biloba, one of the oldest species of tree on the planet. It is also known as the forty-coin tree, the silver apricot tree or simply Ginkgo. The only living representative of the order Ginkgoales, it is recognised for its exceptional resilience. Indeed, Ginkgo biloba first appeared more than 200 million years ago and has managed to survive many disasters, including the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during the Second World War. Studied extensively for its incredible longevity, Ginkgo has been shown to offer many benefits for human health.
Ginkgo biloba’s therapeutic use dates back thousands of years. It is one of the traditional plants of Chinese medicine, used primarily for treating respiratory problems. However, it was not until the 20th century that the scientific community became interested in its therapeutic virtues. Following numerous studies, Ginkgo biloba has become one of the most popular nutritional supplements in the world.
The composition of Ginkgo biloba – particularly that of its leaves - is primarily responsible for its therapeutic benefits. They contain terpenes - sesquiterpene lactones, bilobalides and ginkgolides - as well as flavonoids. Flavonoids are recognised as powerful antioxidants which mitigate the harmful effects of the free radicals responsible for cellular ageing and the development of certain diseases.
As well as flavonoids, ginkgo leaves contain ginkgolides, known for their beneficial effects both on the circulation, and oxygenation of brain tissue. Ginkgo biloba is thus widely-used for protecting neurons, retinal tissue and the brain in general. The brain is of course a complex organ which requires greater reserves of energy, nutrients and oxygen. Good brain oxygenation is thus essential for maintaining normal neurological function. In addition, the antioxidant power of the flavonoids in Ginkgo biloba extract helps protect the brain against free radical damage. With all these beneficial effects, Ginkgo biloba is now associated with the prevention of many health problems such as dizziness, anxiety, dementia, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease.
Our dietary supplement is formulated from an extract of Ginkgo biloba standardised to 24% ginkgo flavonglycosides, 6% terpene lactones, 1.5% ginkgolide A and 1.2% ginkgolide B.
