Xanthinol nicotinate is the most potent form of niacin. It passes easily through cell membranes and can thus act right inside the cell. It has been used for many years as a vasodilator and to treat peripheral circulation problems. It is also used for memory disorders and certain forms of dementia linked to cerebro-vascular insufficiency.
Scientific research has shown that xanthinol nicotinate improves metabolism in the brain, and in particular:
- increases glucose metabolism;
- improves ATP levels;
- stimulates blood circulation.
One study showed that xanthinol nicotinate stimulates memory and reduces reaction times in elderly subjects.
When the effects of xanthinol nicotinate were studied in over 10,000 patients suffering from cerebrovascular insufficiency, it was shown to be most effective for dizziness, fatigue, affective disorders or problems with concentration and vigilance.
Xanthinol nicotinate also appears to improve lipid profiles in subjects with hyperlipidaemia.
