Sophora japonica rich in quercetin

Liposomal quercetin: benefits and risks

Liposomal Quercetin is a dietary supplement containing liquid liposomal quercetin. It combines exceptional efficacy (highly-absorbable form and powerful dose) with ease of use (drinkable format).

You’ll find this premium vegan supplement in our Immunity category.

What exactly is quercetin?

Definition

Quercetin (also known as quercitol and quertine) is a flavonol, a particular type of flavonoid(1).

As you may know, flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds which play an important role in the protection, growth and pigmentation of plants.

Quercetin is notable for its yellow colour and for the many benefits attributed to the plant species that contain it.

Dietary sources

We take in small amounts of this flavonoid when we consume various fruits, vegetables and other plant-source foods(2). The best dietary sources include:

  • yellow and red onions;
  • apples (especially the peel);
  • berries (blackberries and wild blueberries);
  • black and green tea;
  • yellow and green peppers;
  • capers;

The benefits of quercetin, the most powerful bioflavonoid

Anti-infection

Plants produce quercetin to help them grow and to fight pathogens(3). It offers protection against fungal and bacterial infections. It also strengthens cell walls, making it harder for germs to penetrate, thus reducing infections(4-5).

Antioxidant

With antioxidant properties, this flavonoid protects plant cells against damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress (pollution, UV radiation …) (6-7)

Anti-allergy

Several animal and cell studies have also investigated its potential anti-allergy properties. This compound seems to be able to regulate inflammation and inhibit the release of histamine (a molecule usually produced by the immune systems of allergy-sufferers in response to an allergen) (8-9). Many people choose to take quercetin in the spring, when trees are releasing pollen into the atmosphere, though it can be taken all year round.

The active ingredient in several medicinal plants

In addition, this polyphenol is responsible for some of the benefits of many medicinal plants (ginkgo, St. John’s Wort, elderberry …) (10) It’s known to be the most powerful of all the ‘bioflavonoids’, ie, flavonoids that affect human health.

Why opt for liposomal quercetin?

A highly-bioavailable form

Liposomal quercetin is generally considered to be the best form of quercetin because of its excellent bioavailability. The body absorbs and uses it more effectively than it does the standard form, the form obtained by micronisation, and even more so, quercetin anhydrous (11-13).

How do liposomes work?

Liposomal quercetin is encapsulated in lipid microparticles called ‘liposomes’. These facilitate its passage across the intestinal barrier so that it can be released into the bloodstream and reach the body’s cells(14).

And unlike standard quercetin which often ends up being damaged by gastric juices or the liver, this particular form is protected from metabolic degradation, which further increases the amount of active ingredient reaching the bloodstream (15).

Finally, the composition of these liposomes makes it easier for the product to penetrate cell membranes, enabling evening greater quantities of quercetin to reach cells (16).

Why take liposomal quercetin in liquid form?

The liquid format of Liposomal Quercetin offers maximum ease of use, eliminating the need to take capsules. You simply have to drink the product.

This form of delivery is particularly suitable for those who find it difficult to swallow capsules (some elderly people for example). Even if this is not a problem for you, the supplement offers exceptional ease of use and efficacy.

4 reasons to choose Liposomal Quercetin

  1. its exceptional bioavailability: as mentioned, the liposomes ensure outstanding bioavailability and uptake, producing rapid, powerful and long-lasting effects ;
  2. its natural source: Liposomal Quercetin is obtained from a flower extract of Sophora japonica, a well-known ornamental tree and known to be an exceptional source of flavonoids. The liposomes are sunflower lecithin phospholipids (a natural source of phosphatidylcholine). We have chosen it over the less expensive soy lecithin as the latter contains more allergens. The supplement is 100% vegan, and free from nano-particulates and gluten ;
  3. its powerful dose: in the interests of maximising the supplement’s effects, our Sophora japonica flower extract contains a high content of active ingredient (standardised to 95% quercetin) ;
  4. its natural excipients: completely safe, this supplement contains no controversial excipients. In addition to the phosphatidylcholine in the liposomes, the product uses citric acid, a natural preservative which prevents microbial growth and prolongs the life of the product. Potassium sorbate, another natural preservative, is also used for this purpose.

How should you take Liposomal Quercetin?

How to drink it

First give the Liposomal Quercetin a shake, then add one dosing capful to a glass of water or fruit juice. Simply drink the mixture to benefit from the supplement’s effects.

How much is a daily dose?

You can either take one dosing cap twice a day, or two dosing caps once a day. As each 5ml dosing cap contains 100mg of quercetin, you’ll be ingesting 200mg of quercetin a day whichever you choose. Make sure you also eat a varied diet.

Shelf life of our liquid liposomal quercetin

Once opened, keep the liquid supplement refrigerated for a maximum of 2 months.

Are there any side-effects associated with this supplement?

Risks

Quercetin is generally considered safe: there are virtually no risks associated with oral administration in adults at recommended doses. However, some people have reported digestive problems, headaches or more rarely, allergic reactions. It should not be taken for long periods as this may cause mild kidney problems. Neither is it recommended for pregnant women and it should be kept out of children’s reach.

Contra-indications

In terms of contra-indications, it should not be taken at the same time as blood thinners, blood pressure drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or diabetes medication. Take care too, if you have a thyroid disorder, stomach problems, are taking antibiotics or are undergoing chemotherapy (17-18). Be sure to consult your doctor if you have any concerns, and to choose a high-quality, natural-source product from a recognised brand (such as Liposomal Quercetin).

Two other supplements to take in tandem

Vitamin C, antioxidant and pro-immunity

If you’re keen to support your immunity and fight free radicals, then benefit even more from liposomes by taking Liposomal Vitamin C. alongside Liposomal Quercetin. The unbeatable vitamin C supports normal immune system function and energy metabolism, and helps to reduce fatigue, as well as being an excellent antioxidant … (19). Delivered in the form of lipid capsules, this product similarly ensures unparalleled absorption.

And for allergies?

If you suffer from allergies, there are certain plant compounds that can really help. Alongside Liposomal Quercetin, we’d recommend taking our supplement Aller Fight, vegetarian capsules developed to help you cope with allergens. This product combines the best natural ingredients for regulating the immune system (eg astragalus) and supporting respiratory health (eg maritime pine), at optimal doses (20-22).

De momento no puedo opinar sobre si es bueno o no, el tiempo lo dirá. Pero es un líquido bastante denso, tiene buen sabor. Me parece algo caro, pero lo compré en una oferta.
