NMN Max is a dietary supplement containing nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). This is the most direct precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), a coenzyme crucial for the mitochondria, the cells’ powerhouses. Production of NMN and NAD declines with age. Taking NMN helps naturally restore your NMN and NAD levels and thus corrects any deficiency (1).

As its name suggests, NMN Max is powerfully-dosed (1000 mg a day) to guarantee maximum benefits. You’ll find it listed in our ‘Anti-ageing’ category.

What is nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN)?

Nicotinamide mononucleotide, usually abbreviated to NMN, is a specific form of vitamin B3. It’s produced naturally by the body and is also provided by the diet from foods such as broccoli, cucumber, cabbage, avocados ... NMN crosses the intestinal barrier with ease, entering cells before being converted into NAD. That’s why nicotinamide mononucleotide supplements are considered the best NAD boosters available.

Why should you increase your NAD levels?

According to anti-ageing specialist Dr David Sinclair, NAD is the key to cellular communication. In its NAD+ form, it supports optimal mitochondrial function and production of sirtuins (enzymatic proteins that repair DNA), for example, etc. (2)

As production of NMN and NAD decline with age, the mitochondria lose the ability to communicate both with each other and with the cell nucleus. The latter then atrophies and eventually, the whole cell deteriorates. This is one of the primary causes of ageing. As Dr Andrew Salzman explains: “Despite all the progress made in the health field over the last 100 years, there is still a limiting factor: our NMN and NAD levels fall as we get older. And that decline starts between the ages of 30 and 40.” Indeed 50 year-olds have only half the amount of NMN they had in their twenties (3).

The good news is that this decline in mitochondrial communication appears to be reversible. Dr Sinclair again: “The ageing process can be compared to a married couple - when they're young, they communicate well, but over time, that communication breaks down. And just as with a married couple, restoring communication solves the problem”.

Dr Sinclair and his team showed that after 2 year-old mice were injected with NMN, the animals’ NAD levels increased and their channels of cellular communication were repaired. According to one of these scientists’ reports, published in the journal Cell, dramatic improvements were seen in the injected mice within less than a week (stronger musculature, improved blood sugar, decreased inflammation …) All these changes made the mice indistinguishable from younger animals. The report also highlighted NMN’s ability to activate the 7 SIRT genes involved in increasing longevity(4).

A different study, published in Cell in 2013, revealed that NMN and another NAD+ precursor, nicotinamide riboside (NR), extended the lifespan of C. elegans, a worm widely used in scientific research, by more than 10% (5).

What are the benefits of NMN?

Many other studies have demonstrated the positive effects of NMN in both animal and human models (6-10).

These include its ability, once converted into NAD+, to support mitochondrial function, extend the lifespan of cells, regulate glycaemia, promote good quality sleep, reduce fatigue, rejuvenate the skin (anti-wrinkle effect), decrease inflammation of adipose tissue, improve physical performance, support the cardiovascular system, maintain nerve cell function and restore other physiological functions normally compromised by the ageing process (11-17).

It’s therefore often said that NMN can reverse ageing ». NAD+ boosters have become very popular, attracting a wide following.

Why choose the supplement NMN Max?

SuperSmart already offers a best-selling NMN supplement: Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, at a dose of 125mg NMN/day. It’s highly popular with active individuals, especially elite athletes (see interview with Miss Univers Fitness on her supplementation with Nicotinamide Mononucleotide).

NMN Max takes things even further. This supplement offers a powerful dose, one of the highest on the market. Each NMN Max capsule contains 333.33mg of nicotinamide mononucleotide, and we recommend taking 3 capsules a day (ie 1000mg of NMN/day), to maximise your intake of NMN and thus NAD+.

Dr Sinclair himself takes 1000 mg/day, a dose he regularly advocates, and describes taking this supplement as one of his “first priorities” of the day (18-19).

Any questions?

NMN: are there any side-effects or risks?

Studies have shown that nicotinamide mononucleotide is safe and well-tolerated by the body(20-21).

Excessive consumption of NMN (more than 1200 mg/day) may, however, produce side-effects including flushing, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach aches or indigestion. The dose offered by NMN Max, which is very high but deliberately restricted to 1000 mg/day, has been specifically chosen to prevent this kind of adverse effect.

Anti-ageing care: 4 ways to slow down ageing

In addition to supplementing with NMN, adopting these 4 simple measures will support your day to day efforts to slow down the ageing process:

  • exercise: engage in moderately-intense physical activity (running, gym, cycling, walking or even gardening) 4-5 times a week to support your cardiovascular health;
  • stay well-hydrated: drink around a litre and a half of water a day and use a moisturising cream on your face to prevent wrinkles;
  • get enough sleep: lack of sleep can cause the blood vessels to expand, leading to a drop in blood pressure in the brain and a decline in cognitive function. Though sleep requirements vary from one person to another, it’s generally a good idea to aim for 8 hours (or 7 at the very least) ;
  • reduce your oxidative stress: excess free radical production is a contributory factor to inflammation and mutagenesis which promotes ageing and numerous diseases. Try to avoid all pro-oxidant factors: reduce your consumption of grilled/barbecued food, processed meats, fizzy drinks, and alcohol, don’t smoke, and try to manage your psychological stress better …
2 synergistic supplements to take alongside NMN

If you’re keen to maintain your physical and mental health for as long as possible, we’d recommend also taking Longevity Nutrients, a formulation rich in berberine (regulates blood sugar levels, good for the heart…), reishi, known as the ‘mushroom of immortality’ (supports the circulation and immunity), and L-carnosine (levels of which also decline with age), etc. It’s one of the best combinations of nutrients highlighted by anti-ageing research available.

There’s also significant scientific interest in astragaloside IV, an active ingredient in the plant astragalus. Already known for its pro-immunity, cardioprotective and rejuvenating effects, astragaloside IV has also been shown to activate telomerase, an enzyme which prevents the shortening of telomers (the tips of chromosomes) during cell division and thus has a considerable impact on increasing cell longevity. It really makes sense to take Astragaloside IV 98%
