Is GABA dangerous?

A natural substance associated with calm and sleep, GABA is available in several forms of food supplements. But is it really safe?

Find out whether taking GABA supplements could be dangerous

GABA: a natural messenger of relaxation

GABA (or gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter naturally produced by the body.

It plays a fundamental role in balancing the nervous system by curbing excessive neuronal excitation: it is a central nervous system inhibitory neurotransmitter.

In practical terms, GABA acts as a kind of safety brake: it slows down the activity of over-excited neurons, thus helping to:

  • reduce anxiety
  • prepare the body for sleep (1)
  • facilitate concentration
  • improve emotional stability (2)

Its presence is essential for modulating the brain circuits linked to wakefulness, vigilance, stress and emotion.

By acting as a natural modulator of neuronal excitation, GABA helps to maintain the balance between tension and relaxation in the central nervous system.

Conversely, an imbalance in the GABAergic system (due to insufficient production or poor receptor sensitivity) can be observed in certain states of mental fragility (3).

This imbalance generally results in irritability, persistent anxiety, or difficulty sleeping or concentrating.

It is the calming role of endogenous GABA that has led to the development of GABA-based food supplements, with formulas designed to promote relaxation and sleep (4).

Is GABA dangerous? What are the potential risks?

GABA is well tolerated by the vast majority of users, particularly when taken according to the recommended dosage.

However, as with any active substance that acts on the nervous system, it may cause some undesirable effects in some people, in particular:

  • drowsiness or cognitive slowing
  • headaches
  • numbness
  • reduced alertness in the hours after taking it

As with many other substances, some situations may increase the risks or contraindicate the use of GABA:

  • Interaction with medicines, particularly those that also act on the GABAergic system (benzodiazepines, sleeping tablets, antidepressants, anticonvulsants): GABA could reinforce their effects and cause excessive sedation.
  • Alcohol: concomitant consumption of alcohol and GABA may increase drowsiness and disturb alertness.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: as a precautionary measure, it is preferable to avoid GABA during these periods (in the absence of sufficient data on its safety).
  • Neurological or psychiatric disorders: medical advice must be sought before any supplements are taken.

The available studies and feedback indicate that GABA, when used on its own and in the correct dosage, is one of the safest supplements in its category (5).

Which GABA supplement should I choose?

GABA is currently available in several forms and is incorporated into several types of food supplements. In addition, other natural substances can also act indirectly on the GABAergic system.

A classic GABA supplement

This is the simplest, additive-free preparation, directly supplied in its free form.

-Discover GABA, a pure, well-tolerated supplement that uses a powerful dosage to help GABA cross the blood-brain barrier.

PharmaGABA®: a natural, fermented form

Derived from fermentation by lactobacilli, PharmaGABA® is a patented natural form of GABA, often better tolerated by sensitive individuals.

-Discover PharmaGABA®, a 100% natural fermented version of GABA, produced from Lactobacillus hilgardii.

Liposomal GABA: for optimal absorption

Encapsulated in liposomes (vesicles surrounded by fat), this form aims to improve the bioavailability of GABA, so that it reaches the brain more easily.

-Discover Liposomal GABA, an innovative formula designed for better assimilation. Highly dosed, it is conveniently packaged as a liquid GABA drink.

Picamilon: effective at crossing the blood-brain barrier

Picamilon is a molecule combining GABA and niacin (vitamin B3). Niacin contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological functioning.

This combination promotes the passage of GABA into the brain, while supporting cerebral microcirculation.

-Discover Picamilon, an excellent combination of GABA and niacin for psychological functioning, energy metabolism and fatigue reduction.

L-theanine: a natural modulator of GABA

L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea. In the body, it stimulates GABA receptors, making them more sensitive to its effects.

Studies highlight its role in improving sleep quality and reducing drowsiness (6).

-Discover L-Theanine, a 100% natural extract of green tea (Camellia sinensis) with a high dose of L-theanine, to help you calm down and relax without getting drowsy.

L-Threonate magnesium: targeted magnesium for the brain

Magnesium L-threonate is a form of magnesium capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain.

Involved in the regulation of GABA receptors, magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function, reduced fatigue and normal psychological functioning.

-Discover Magnesium L-Threonate, a latest-generation magnesium supplement with unbeatable bioavailability and solubility.

A combination of soothing plants and tryptophan: for a gentle effect

Renowned for their soothing and relaxing properties, certain plants — such as valerian and lemon balm — are recommended in naturopathy to promote sleep and relaxation, and contribute to a healthy nervous balance.

Traditionally used for its sedative properties, hop extract has a calming effect on the nervous system.

The active ingredients in these natural substances could interact with GABA receptors and modulate GABAergic signalling in the brain, enhancing the relaxation effect (7).

An essential amino acid, L-tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin ('the happiness hormone'), which itself interacts with the GABAergic system. And this indirect effect can contribute to a better emotional balance (8).

-Discover Natural Sleep Formula, a complete formula containing valerian and L-tryptophan, which naturally helps you fall asleep and stay asleep.
