Composition and benefits of our saffron anti-stress supplement

Stress: definition and consequences

Stress is the body's reaction to a situation perceived as a threat, leading to mental agitation and emotional exhaustion.

When it becomes excessive and recurrent, stress can:

  • disrupt mood, with increased irritability and anxiety;
  • deplete energy and cause persistent fatigue;
  • alter sleep patterns by disrupting the circadian rhythm;
  • encourage sugar cravings;
  • create or increase deficiencies (particularly in magnesium);
  • increase cardiovascular, digestive and immune risks.

The union of 4 ingredients to combat stress

In response, our anti-stress food supplement combines 4 choice ingredients:

  • Affron® saffron extract: saffron is a spice obtained by drying the red stigmas of the crocus flower (Crocus sativus). It contributes to emotional balance, helping you to relax and be in a good mood by naturally stimulating the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. Affron® saffron extract is standardised with over 3.5% Lepticrosalides®, a patented full-spectrum blend of synergistic bioactive compounds responsible for saffron's effectiveness against depression, anxiety and insomnia, according to 9 clinical studies. This saffron extract is also the most clinically studied (1-11). One randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (N = 128) showed that taking Affron® (28 mg/day for 4 weeks) significantly reduced mood disorders such as tension, anger, depression, fatigue and confusion (12). Another randomised clinical trial found that taking Affron® (28 mg/day for 28 days) improved the quality and restorative nature of sleep, with fewer night-time awakenings and increased wakefulness, with the main benefits appearing as early as the first week (13). In each case, Affron® was well tolerated, and no side effects were reported. What's more, Affron® is the world's most awarded saffron extract: it has been recognised by the NutraIngredients Awards, Frost & Sullivan, the NIE Awards and the Innovation Awards for its quality, its sustainable AFF®ON Cool-Tech technology and its remarkable results;
  • Magnesium bisglycinate: magnesium is a mineral which contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system by regulating neuronal excitability. It also helps to reduce fatigue by activating ATP, the cellular energy molecule. Finally, it contributes to normal psychological functioning by promoting the activity of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) and reducing the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. If low magnesium levels increase sensitivity to stress, excess stress in turn leads to increased mobilisation and elimination of magnesium, maintaining a 'vicious circle' in which magnesium deficiency and stress reinforce each other. Five of the 7 studies analysed in a systematic review of clinical trials in 2024 reported a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms thanks to magnesium supplementation (14). In this case, we opted for magnesium bisglycinate, a combination of magnesium and two glycine molecules, which is the most bioavailable form and the best tolerated from a digestive point of view;
  • L-theanine: this amino acid derived from green tea is mainly responsible for its soothing and relaxing effect, without sedation. L-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier and appears to compete with glutamate at NMDA and AMPA receptors, thereby attenuating excitatory signalling. L-theanine is also thought to reduce glutamate release while increasing GABA levels and promoting the release of glycine, dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Finally, it is thought to increase alpha wave activity, a pattern associated with relaxed alertness. In a double-blind randomised crossover clinical trial in 2019 (30 healthy adults, 200 mg/day of L-theanine for 4 weeks), participants showed a significant reduction in anxiety and stress-related symptoms, as well as an improvement in sleep quality compared with placebo (15). Another trial on acute stress using a single dose of 200 mg (randomised, triple-blind crossover) showed that L-theanine increased frontal alpha brain waves and produced a greater drop in salivary cortisol 1 hour after a stressor, compared with placebo (16). These changes correspond to a calming and anxiolytic effect on the brain;
  • Bioactive vitamin B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate): vitamin B6 helps to reduce fatigue by participating in the production of energy from nutrients. It also helps to support the normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological functioning by being necessary for the synthesis of essential neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, GABA), low levels of which aggravate sensitivity to stress. It has also been studied to promote magnesium absorption by facilitating its entry into cells. A vast 8-week randomised controlled study (on 264 healthy adults with high stress levels and low magnesium levels) compared the administration of magnesium alone with that of magnesium + vitamin B6. Both groups showed a significant reduction in stress and anxiety scores, from 'severe' at the start of the study to near-normal levels by the 8th week, with significant results as early as the first 4 weeks. The group receiving the Mg + B6 combination showed a greater reduction in perceived stress (17). What's more, the form chosen in our formula, pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P), is the bioactive form of B6 that can be used directly by the body.

4 key benefits of this saffron + magnesium + B6 + theanine stress formula

SaffronMag Relax Complex has 4 key benefits:

  • its effective natural synergy, proven by science: this product combines 4 natural ingredients with widely recognised and documented anti-stress effects;
  • Affron® saffron extract, multi-studied and multi-primed: we selected Affron® for its concentration of active ingredients, its purity, its use in the largest number of clinical studies devoted to saffron (with the striking results mentioned above) and its many awards, which attest to its exceptional quality. More than 5 million people around the world benefit from Affron® every year;
  • highly bioavailable and ideally dosed ingredients: unlike many formulas on the market that merely showcase certain ingredients without guaranteeing optimal absorption or effective dosages, our product combines only high-quality, bioavailable forms (Affron® saffron, magnesium bisglycinate, vitamin B6 (P-5-P) etc.) at optimal doses (28 mg/day of Affron®, 750 mg/day of magnesium bisglycinate, etc.) to ensure optimum effectiveness against stress;
  • vegetarian capsules with natural excipients: the vegan capsules we use are made from hypromellose (HPMC) and contain rice flour, a plant-based ingredient, as their only excipient.

Any questions?

Our team of nutrition experts and scientists has the answers.

How can saffron be used to combat stress?

Saffron is commonly used to support emotional balance and help you relax.

It can be used as a spice, as an infusion or in powder form.

For maximum effectiveness, it is best to consume it in the form of standardised extract capsules, which guarantee a high and precise content of active ingredients (as is the case with our product).

It is these particular nutrients in saffron, such as crocin and safranal, that are associated with the modulation of the neurotransmitters involved in stress and anxiety.

Why take magnesium + B6?

Magnesium is crucial for nervous health, helping you to cope better with stress.

For its part, in addition to its own benefits for the nervous system and mental health, vitamin B6 is reputed to promote the transport of magnesium into cells and its incorporation into biological reactions, thereby boosting performance, a finding supported by clinical evidence.

Magnesium and vitamin B6 are therefore frequently combined, particularly in food supplements for the nervous system, energy and fatigue.

What is the best magnesium to combat stress?

Magnesium bisglycinate is a particularly valuable form of magnesium for its superior bioavailability and good digestive tolerance.

Its optimal absorption capacity makes it more effective in providing all the benefits of magnesium, including supporting the nervous system in the face of stress.

Which synergistic food supplements should I take with our dietary supplement for stress?

In addition to taking SaffronMag Relax Complex, enjoy the benefits of omega-3. These essential fatty acids contribute to the normal functioning of the brain, reinforcing emotional balance and stress management (ideally opt for Super Omega 3, the purest and most stable omega-3 supplement on the market).

Also, explore the action of GABA, a neurotransmitter naturally present in the brain, which plays a key role in regulating nervous excitability and promoting relaxation. GABA is available in supplement form, such as liposomal GABA, renowned for its superior assimilation (like Liposomal GABA).

Another compound we recommend combining with SaffronMag Relax Complex is 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Naturally produced by the body, 5-HTP is a direct precursor of serotonin, a well-known neurotransmitter involved in mood, sleep and stress reduction. 5-HTP is found in certain plants and in some supplements derived from them (see 5-HTP, our Griffonia simplicifolia extract standardised to 98% 5-HTP).
