Vitamin K2 MK-7 + Vitamin D3 is a dietary supplement containing menaquinone-7 (MK-7), a form of vitamin K2 recognised for effectively increasing blood levels of vitamin K (1).

Combined with vitamin D3 in an oil-based capsule (softgel), it is the formula of choice for anyone wishing to maintain healthy bones and normal blood clotting (2).

What is menaquinone-7 (MK-7) and why is it known as the ‘queen’ of vitamin K2?

Definition of vitamin K2

Vitamin K2, also known as menaquinone, belongs to the vitamin K family.

Unlike vitamin K1 (phylloquinone), which is mainly found in green leafy vegetables, vitamin K2 occurs naturally in certain fermented foods, such as natto, sauerkraut and some dairy products, as well as in egg yolks and liver (3).

It can also be synthesised by certain bacteria in the gut microbiota, although the extent to which this endogenous production meets vitamin K2 requirements remains a matter of debate (4).

Vitamin K2 MK-7: a longer half-life

Vitamin K2 comprises several forms, designated MK-4 to MK-13, which differ in the length of their isoprenic side chains.

Among these, menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is characterised by a particularly long plasma half-life, enabling it to maintain more stable blood concentrations than shorter-chain forms, such as MK-4 (5).

Thanks to its high bioavailability and its persistence in the body, vitamin K2 MK-7 is now the most widely studied form in human supplementation and has established itself as the benchmark in dietary supplements designed to support vitamin K-dependent physiological functions, particularly in bone tissue (6).

Composition and benefits of our Vitamin K2 + D3

How does vitamin K work in the body?

Vitamin K performs several key biological functions within the body:

  • Blood clotting: Vitamin K takes its name from the German word ‘Koagulation’ (coagulation), due to the essential role it plays in this physiological process. Absorbed along with dietary fats, it is transported by chylomicrons via the lymphatic system and then largely taken up by the liver. There, it acts as an essential cofactor in the activation of several clotting proteins, notably prothrombin (factor II) as well as factors VII, IX and X, through a biochemical modification known as γ-carboxylation. This step is essential for these proteins to become fully functional (7);
  • bone mineralisation: vitamin K2 activates, in particular, osteocalcin, a protein synthesised by osteoblasts that plays a role in the binding of calcium to the bone matrix. It thus contributes to the ongoing remodelling of the skeleton by maintaining a balance between osteoblasts, which build bone, and osteoclasts, which break it down (8);
  • improved calcium distribution: vitamin K2 plays a role in the activation of matrix GLA protein (MGP), a vitamin K-dependent protein found in blood vessel walls. Once activated, MGP inhibits calcification of soft tissues. Several studies suggest that an optimal vitamin K status could therefore help to limit calcium deposits outside the skeleton, a mechanism studied in particular in the context of atherosclerosis and vascular ageing (9);
  • a putative role in inflammatory balance: several observational studies have highlighted an association between a higher vitamin K intake and lower systemic markers of inflammation. These findings suggest a potential role for vitamin K in regulating the inflammatory response, but are not sufficient to establish a causal link (10);
  • An emerging area of interest in dermatology: vitamin K-dependent proteins, such as MGP and Gas6, are also expressed in the skin, where they play a role in tissue homeostasis. Furthermore, experimental studies suggest that vitamin K2 may modulate inflammatory pathways involved in certain skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis. However, these findings remain preliminary and need to be confirmed by clinical trials in humans (11);
  • a potential ally in promoting longevity: several cohort studies have found that a higher dietary intake of vitamin K is associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. However, these findings remain observational and, once again, do not establish a causal link (12–13).

Why combine vitamins K2 and D3 in the same dietary supplement?

Vitamins K2 and D3 are two fat-soluble vitamins that play complementary roles in bone metabolism.

Whilst vitamin K helps maintain normal bone structure by activating proteins essential for bone mineralisation, vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that are essential for skeletal strength (14).

Several randomised controlled trials suggest that the combination of vitamins K2 and D3 may have complementary effects on bone remodelling.

In postmenopausal women, this combination may improve bone mineral density more effectively than supplementation with vitamin K2 or vitamin D3 alone (15).

4 key benefits and reasons to buy our vitamin K2 MK-7 supplement with vitamin D3

Vitamin K2 MK-7 + Vitamin D3 has 4 key benefits:

  1. MK-7, the best form of vitamin K2: menaquinone-7 is currently the most widely studied form of vitamin K2 in human supplementation. With its exceptional bioavailability, it promotes more effective activation of vitamin K-dependent proteins, such as osteocalcin and MGP. Research has notably shown that MK-7 can increase circulating levels of vitamin K by up to eight times more than an equivalent dose of vitamin K1 (16);
  2. a clever synergy with vitamin D3: combined in a single capsule, vitamin K2 MK-7 and vitamin D3 offer a synergistic combination to help maintain bone mass;
  3. a scientifically sound dosage: each capsule provides 90 μg of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 and 400 IU of vitamin D3, dosages in line with those evaluated in several clinical trials focusing on the combination of these vitamins (17);
  4. softgels for optimal absorption: vitamins K2 and D3, both of which are fat-soluble, are dissolved in olive oil and then encapsulated as softgels, a particularly suitable formulation that facilitates their absorption in the gut whilst maintaining their stability.

Who is it for?

Our vitamin D3 and K2 supplement is intended for anyone wishing to maintain their bone health in the long term and optimise their intake of these two essential vitamins.

It is particularly recommended for:

  • adults over the age of 40, to support the natural age-related changes in bone metabolism;
  • postmenopausal women, in whom the decline in oestrogen is accompanied by accelerated bone remodelling and a gradual loss of bone mineral density (18);
  • for people with fragile bones or who wish to maintain their bone mineral density, as a supplement to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle;
  • people suffering from intestinal absorption disorders, particularly in cases of coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease or other malabsorption syndromes, which may limit the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (19);
  • people concerned about their cardiovascular health, as vitamin K2 is attracting growing interest for its potential role in regulating calcium metabolism within vascular tissues;
  • people who consume few foods rich in vitamin K2.

Which synergistic dietary supplements should be taken alongside our Vitamin D3 K2 MK-7?

Herbs to support bone health

Certain herbs are traditionally used to help prevent bone loss.

These include Astragalus membranaceus, Cuscuta chinensis, Eucommia ulmoides and Rehmannia glutinosa.

Experimental studies suggest that they may help to inhibit the activity of osteoclasts, which are responsible for bone resorption, whilst supporting that of osteoblasts, which are involved in bone formation.

-For example, you can buy Bone Health, which combines these four plant extracts in a single formulation.

The complementary roles of calcium and magnesium

Calcium is a mineral essential for maintaining normal bones.

When combined with magnesium – which helps activate vitamin D and ensures the proper functioning of parathyroid hormone, the main hormone regulating calcium balance in the body – it is the ideal complement to vitamin K2 and D3 supplementation.

- Calcium Orotate, which combines calcium orotate and magnesium, is particularly recommended in cases of insufficient dietary calcium intake or increased requirements.

Why combine vitamin K2 and omega-3?

Although omega-3s do not play a direct role in vitamin K metabolism, they form a natural part of a holistic approach to cardiovascular health, as the fatty acids EPA and DHA contribute to the normal functioning of the heart.

-See Super Omega 3, which stands out for its highly purified EPA and DHA, sourced from sustainable fisheries, and for its particularly low oxidation index (TOTOX), a guarantee of excellent quality and high stability.

Vitamin K2 and D3 deficiency: what are the causes and symptoms?

Symptoms of vitamin K2 and vitamin D deficiency

Deficiencies in vitamins K2 and D3 often develop without noticeable symptoms and are not always associated with specific signs.

When these symptoms do occur, they may be accompanied by, amongst other things, a gradual weakening of bone tissue, a reduction in bone mineral density or, in the case of a severe vitamin D deficiency, muscle weakness and an increased risk of falls, particularly amongst older people (20).

A severe vitamin K deficiency, on the other hand, can lead to impaired blood clotting, which may increase the likelihood of bleeding or bruising (21).

If in doubt, seeking medical advice and, if necessary, undergoing blood tests will enable an accurate assessment of vitamin status.

What factors contribute to a reduction in K2 and D3 levels?

Certain situations or lifestyle habits can affect vitamin K2 and D3 status.

These include, in particular:

  • a diet low in fermented foods (natto, certain mature cheeses, etc.) or oily fish;
  • limited exposure to sunlight, which restricts the skin’s synthesis of vitamin D (22);
  • ageing, which gradually reduces the skin’s production of vitamin D and is sometimes accompanied by a reduction in dietary intake (23);
  • certain intestinal malabsorption disorders (coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, pancreatic insufficiency, etc.);
  • prolonged use of certain medicines, particularly antibiotics, which may disrupt the gut microbiota and reduce endogenous production of vitamin K2, or certain treatments affecting vitamin D metabolism (24).

Quality, purity and traceability

Vitamin K2 MK-7 + Vitamin D3 combines vitamin K2 in its menaquinone-7 (MK-7) form – which is well-documented in the scientific literature – with vitamin D3, in a formulation designed to promote their absorption and stability.

Vitamins K2 and D3 are bound to a lipid matrix based on olive oil, then encapsulated in softgels – a formulation particularly well-suited to fat-soluble vitamins.

The composition has been deliberately kept to the bare essentials, containing only the ingredients necessary for their protection and proper preservation.

Like all SuperSmart supplements, Vitamin K2 MK-7 + Vitamin D3 has undergone rigorous quality controls at every stage of its manufacture.

Any questions?

Our team of nutrition experts and scientists has the answers.

What is the difference between vitamin K1 and vitamin K2?

Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is mainly found in green leafy vegetables and is primarily taken up by the liver, where it plays a key role in regulating blood clotting.

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone), which occurs naturally in certain fermented foods and animal products, is distributed more widely to extra-hepatic tissues— ly bones and blood vessels—where it helps to activate vitamin K-dependent proteins, such as osteocalcin and MGP.

How should Vitamin K2 MK-7 + Vitamin D3 be taken?

It is recommended to take the softgel with a meal, preferably with sources of fat (oily fish, nuts, vegetable oils, cheese, etc.), to optimise the absorption of vitamins K2 and D3.

However, the fact that they are incorporated into olive oil and presented in softgel form already contributes to their excellent bioavailability.

How can you look after your bones on a daily basis?

Bone health depends first and foremost on a healthy lifestyle.

As well as ensuring an adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K and protein, it is recommended that you take regular exercise, preferably high-impact activities (brisk walking, hiking, running, etc.), as the mechanical stress these activities exert stimulates bone remodelling.

Conversely, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can, in the long term, weaken bone mass.

Why is MK-7 the best form of vitamin K?

The term ‘vitamin K’ encompasses various substances derived from the same molecular core, all of which play a role in the activation of certain clotting factors.

Our Vitamin K2 MK-7 + Vitamin D3 is an excellent source of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), the form of vitamin K2 with the highest bioavailability and activity.

Menaquinone-7 has the longest half-life and can raise blood vitamin K levels up to eight times more than conventional vitamin K1.

Are there any contraindications to taking vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 is generally well tolerated at the doses usually taken.

However, people on anticoagulant treatment, particularly with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), must consult their doctor before taking any supplements, as vitamin K may interact with these treatments.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a chronic condition, it is also recommended that you seek advice from a healthcare professional.

What are the capsules in this product made of?

The softgels (also known as ‘soft capsules’) in this product are of bovine origin and made from high-quality gelatine.

Safe and effective, they are particularly well suited to supplements that require rapid solubility.

When we take several health supplements at the same time, it is difficult to know the effectiveness of each one. What is certain, as in a football team, is that the result of the whole team is what counts. As far as I am concerned, I find this health supplement indispensable for daily use. This is certainly the reason why I look twenty years younger than my actual age.
