R-alpha-lipoic acid is the form of lipoic acid produced naturally by the body and the only one which acts as a mitochondrial enzyme cofactor. You can now buy Sodium R-lipoate, a sodium salt of R-alpha-lipoic acid in vegetarian capsules, with much greater bioavailability than R-alpha-lipoic acid. It rapidly produces blood levels 10 to 30 times higher than is possible with pure R-alpha-lipoic acid. More stable and more easily soluble in the aqueous phase, it is much more easily absorbed.

What are the benefits associated to Sodium R-Lipoate capsules?

R-alpha-lipoic acid's efficacy and superior benefits over other forms have been demonstrated in numerous studies which suggest, in particular, that it:

  • Increases or maintains levels of other antioxidants, particularly vitamins C and E, CoQ10 and glutathione. It prevents depletion of glutathione in cytoplasm and mitochondria.
  • Increases cellular and mitochondrial antioxidant activity and prevents degradation of mitochondria. It effectively halts age-related increased in oxidative stress.
  • Has beneficial effects on metabolism and cellular energy production, preventing metabolic dysfunction linked to the presence of advanced glycation end products.
  • Is the only form of lipoic acid to demonstrate increased life expectancy in immuno-deprived mice.
  • Is more effective than S-alpha-lipoic acid at increasing insulin-stimulated glucose transport and glucose metabolism in the skeletal muscle of insulin-resistant rats.
  • Increases the metabolic rate and reduces age-associated gains in body fat mass.
  • Reduces atherosclerotic lesions in large blood vessels.
  • Mimics the effects of insulin on glucose absorption in insulin-resistant cells and may help restore glucose availability in tissues such as skeletal muscle.
  • Prevents hyperglycaemia and reduces insulin levels.
  • May prevent and treat diabetes and some of its complications. It is particularly effective at treating retinopathy (affecting the retina) and diabetic neuropathy. It also lowers the risk of cardiovascular complications common among diabetics.
  • Improves memory, reverses cognitive dysfunction and protects against age-related neurodegeneration.
  • May increase production of acetylcholine, an essential neurotransmitter of the nervous system deficient in the brains of those with Alzheimer's disease.

How should the supplement Fructo-oligosaccharides be used?

We recommend sprinkling a half to two spoonfuls (2.5-10g) of Fructo-oligosaccharides a day on food and drinks (3). If you have a very sensitive stomach, you can start with half a spoonful and gradually increase the dose.

Fructo-oligosaccharides have a chemical structure very close to that of sugar (sucrose): they therefore taste sweet, though their sweetening power is a third of sucrose’s with only 2kcal per gram, half as much as sugar.

In addition, you can slightly and gradually increase your consumption of fruit, vegetables, pulses and wholegrains, all of which are rich in soluble and insoluble fibre. Choose from the excellent sources below:

  • Cooked legumes (15g per portion)
  • Wheat bran (10g)
  • Soya beans (8g)
  • Raspberries (5g)
  • Artichokes (5g)
  • Prunes (5g)
  • Unpeeled pears (5g)
  • Peas (5g)
  • Blackberries (5g)
  • Pumpkin (4g)
  • Dates (4g)
  • Unpeeled potatoes (4g)
  • Boiled spinach (4g)
  • Sweet potatoes (4g)
  • Unpeeled apples (3g)

In general, we recommend consuming 25g-30g of dietary fibre a day. But be aware of the symptoms of eating too much fibre - diarrhoea, flatulence, nausea, bloating, etc – and adjust the amount accordingly.

It’s also worth noting that the effects of dietary fibre are enhanced by good hydration. We recommend drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day, spread out throughout the day.

What other dietary supplements should be taken in addition to fructo-oligosaccharides?

Depending on the reason why you’re looking to consume more fibre, the following supplements may also be of interest:
